Mo Gawdat spent thirty years at the cutting edge of technology — from early roles at IBM and Microsoft to joining Google in 2007, where he helped launch the platform across more than 50 emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He went on to serve as Chief Business Officer of Google X, Google’s “moonshot factory,” leading business strategy and partnerships for some of the world’s most ambitious initiatives, including Project Loon — the high-altitude balloon project designed to bring affordable internet to the five billion people still beyond reach of conventional infrastructure.
During those years, Gawdat also co-founded more than 20 businesses and served on boards spanning technology, health, consumer goods, and government innovation councils across the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
In 2014, he tragically lost his son, and from there, everything had changed. The tragedy became the catalyst for Solve for Happy (2017), in which Gawdat applied an engineer’s rigor to the question of human joy. The book launched One Billion Happy, his global mission to bring that framework to a billion people. Three more books followed: Scary Smart (2021), a prescient examination of AI’s trajectory; That Little Voice in Your Head (2022); and Unstressable (2024, co-authored with Alice Law).
Today, Gawdat is one of the world’s most sought-after voices on artificial intelligence and its implications for humanity. He serves as Chief AI Officer of Flight Story, hosts the chart-topping podcast Slo Mo, and is widely credited as one of the earliest public figures to sound the alarm on AI’s unregulated development — long before it became a mainstream conversation.
Outside of all of it, he draws charcoal portraits, builds mosaics, does carpentry, and restores classic cars.
