Melanie Perkins is an entrepreneur and co-founder and CEO of Canva, an online platform that makes graphic design accessible to everyone. Her story epitomizes the entrepreneurial journey—using passion, grit, and determination to overcome challenges and find success.
At 19, while studying digital media in college, Melanie grew frustrated by how long it took to create simple graphic design elements like marketing brochures. She began helping classmates navigate design tools and creating instruction manuals, which sparked her desire to start her own business. She co-founded Fusion Books from her mother’s living room—an online platform for school yearbook design that became the largest yearbook publisher in Australia. Through Fusion Books, she learned how to sell, recruit, and build a successful business.
Melanie then set out to create a platform that would simplify graphic design for users of all skill levels, especially those with no prior experience. But success didn’t happen overnight. It took three years from meeting their first investor to receiving their first investment. She could have given up, but she believed her work had global implications for the future of technology and design.
A decade later, Canva is valued as a multibillion-dollar company with over 10 million users across 179 countries. Famed Apple Chief Evangelist Guy Kawasaki loved the idea and joined as Canva’s Chief Evangelist in the early stages. Within a year of launch, Canva had over 1 million users.
As a keynote speaker, Melanie shares insights on the entrepreneurial journey, taking risks, creativity, simplifying business strategy, problem-solving, and finding joy in your work.
