Mitch Lowe’s career in entertainment spans four decades and has shaped the way the world watches content.
In the mid-1980s, he built a chain of ten video rental stores across Northern California while serving as president of the national trade association for the entertainment retail industry. Mitch Lowe’s career in entertainment spans four decades and has shaped the way the world watches content.
In the mid-1980s, he built a chain of ten video rental stores across Northern California while serving as president of the national trade association for the entertainment retail industry. Even then, Lowe recognized that physical media was a temporary stop on a longer journey — and began positioning himself for what came next.
In the early 1990s, he co-founded a startup with one of Autodesk’s co-founders to deliver internet services and marketing tools to video retailers nationwide. By the late 1990s, he had connected with Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings, two entrepreneurs looking for someone who understood the rental business. Lowe joined what would become Netflix in 1998, spending its first five years leading Business Development and Strategic Alliances. As part of the core executive team, he helped devise the “All You Can Eat” subscription model — the foundation of how the world now consumes entertainment.
Following Netflix’s IPO, Lowe was recruited by McDonald’s to launch a new concept: automated DVD rental kiosks. He joined Redbox as COO, later ascending to President and CEO, and over eight years grew the company to over $1.5 billion in revenue.
Today, Lowe advises investors and coaches leaders across the startup world, drawing on a career spent not just watching the future of entertainment unfold — but building it.
